As the old Chinese saying goes: “May you live in interesting times,” and at least in my experience - I can’t think of a time where it hasn’t been more interesting or challenging. As we head into 2017, I think about the work it takes to transition leadership roles and how important communication and action are in that process.
Change is . . . . Difficult, scary, exhilarating, exhausting - most importantly, it’s inevitable. And here we are, facing transitions that bring to mind, all of these emotions. So what can we do to be a part of, and ease into, what’s next?
Engage! As Ghandi said - “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Don’t sit on the sideline and wonder what just happened - BE the reason - the purpose - the direction of what’s next - what’s new - what’s relevant. Volunteer; step up; participate in the world in which you live. If you don’t think you HAVE time; MAKE time!
Volunteer! Find ways and opportunities to contribute your time, attention, expertise, finances and energy to the places and causes that mean the most to you. Focus! What matters most to you? What needs to happen to ensure that the world is a safe place for EVERYONE? Who do you know that would benefit from your participation? Do YOU need the support of others in order to be successful yourself?
Make a plan! Set your goals for 2017 - think about the people with whom you will need to engage to help you achieve your goals. Reach out and let them know how important they are to you and your process. They can’t help if they don’t know they’re needed.
I often say that you get what you give. The more you give, the more you receive in return. I hope you are able to give more of yourself in 2017 than you ever have before.
I wish each of you a safe and happy holiday season, and hope that 2017 provides opportunities for us to work together in the spirit of community.
Fondly, Lisa Sterritt
